Unified LLP – a Firm That Cares

At Unified LLP, our lawyers are dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of our clients. Our commitment was recently highlighted in a CBC article about Donald Street in Ottawa, where a community of tenants faced significant rent increases that threatened their stability and well-being. This story revolves around one particular long-time resident who is working with the tenant lawyers at Unified to protect his rights.

The Story

The journey began when one of the affected tenants, Marcia Thompson, reached out to her family friend, Gil Fischler (head of Unified’s employment lawyer and long term disability lawyer terms), for assistance. She was being forced to pay an additional $3,000 as a lump sum following an above-guideline rent increase (AGI). The health-care worker was only able to make the payment with emergency financial assistance she received through a city-administered fund.
Recognizing the complexity of the situation, Gil knew that Marcia needed specialized support from an experienced tenant lawyer in Ontario. Gil introduced Marcia to Kirsty Niglas-Collins, who heads the tenant lawyer team at Unified LLP. Kirsty is now fighting to protect Marcia’s rights, attempting to bring the case before the Landlord Tenant Board.

Kirsty’s Dedication to Tenant Rights

Kirsty is a staunch advocate for tenants across Ontario. She works tirelessly to address rent increases imposed on vulnerable residents. Kirsty’s extensive knowledge of tenant law, combined with her unwavering commitment to justice, makes her a fierce defender of tenants across Ontario. She guides tenants through the complexities of their situation, helping them understand their rights and options.

Challenges Faced by Ontario Tenants

The story of Donald Street is not unique. Across Ontario, many tenants face similar challenges with unfair rent increases and landlord practices. For individuals relying on ODSP or other long-term disability programs (as in the CBC article), these challenges are particularly daunting. The fixed income provided by these programs often falls short of covering unexpected rent hikes, leading to a precarious living situation and the constant fear of eviction.

The Prevalence of Long-Term Disability Benefit Denials

In addition to tenant issues, many individuals on ODSP, CPPD or similar programs face challenges with long-term disability benefit denials which impacts millions of Canadians. These denials can leave individuals without the financial support they desperately need to cover basic living expenses, including housing. The process of appealing a disability benefit denial can be complex and overwhelming, often requiring legal expertise to navigate successfully.
